Dementia Care

The Alzheimer’s Care Centre caters for people from all walks of life who have been diagnosed with Dementia. There are 65,000 people living with dementia in Ireland and 500,000 of us live in families who have been affected by dementia.

Dementia is not a single disease – in fact it describes a range of symptoms caused by diseases of the brain. These symptoms affect multiple brain functions including memory, behaviour and our ability to do everyday tasks.  There are many different types of dementia including Alzheimer’s, Lewy Body and Vascular dementia.

Choosing a nursing home for a loved one with dementia is a difficult decision. Here at Highfield Healthcare in our Alzheimer’s Care Centre we cater specifically for residents with Dementia.

Our units are laid out in a dementia friendly and specific way. The use of colour and the layout of units and furnishings have all been chosen in consultation with dementia specialists. Our highly trained staff provide resident focused person centred care. We have a full team of nurses, healthcare assistants, occupational therapists and activity therapists, who provide the highest standard of care to our residents. We have daily visits from our GPs to ensure all medical needs are catered for.

On admission you and your family together with your key nurse will draw up person centred care plans, specific to you, taking all your likes and dislikes into consideration. Your preferences and choices are the lynch-pin of your care here.

At Highfield we encourage all our residents to participate in a wide range of activities. These activities are tailored to each resident’s preference. We are also mindful that some residents may not enjoy large group activities and so we also plan activities that appeal to residents who wish to remain in their bedroom.

Our vast activity programme includes;

  • Arts and crafts
  • Pet therapy
  • Reminiscence
  • Sonas
  • Imagination Gym
  • Drama groups
  • Doll Therapy
  • Reading groups
  • Music therapy
  • Knitting
  • Regular Sing-a-long
  • Bingo
  • Story telling
